Nurse spotlight: Ashli Shain

Ashli Shain is new to Wichita Presbyterian Manor, but she’s a 5-year veteran of the nursing profession.

The registered nurse earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Butler Community College, and she plans to further her education in a bachelor of science in nursing program.

Ashli’s mother, one of her sisters, and a cousin are all registered nurses, and she has another sister who’s a respiratory therapist. Given the number of health care workers in her family, it may not be surprising that Ashli followed their footsteps. Still, she has surprised herself by how quickly she has grown in her career.

“I first became a CNA working in long-term care and fell in love with it,” Ashli said. “I really enjoy the conversations I have with residents. They have such amazing stories to tell and building relationships with them and their families is so rewarding.”

Her experience and support from her coworkers have helped Ashli transition into a new job in the middle of a global health crisis, a situation she describes as “busy.”

No kidding.

“We have such an amazing team here. Everyone is willing to help each other and make sure the residents and families are taken care of,” Ashli said. “I am proud to be a part of it.”

Ashli also has her hands full at home, as she and her husband Adam Lawson have five children: four boys ranging in age from 3 – 14, and one 6-year-old girl.

Adam coaches two of the boys in competitive baseball year-round. The boys also play football for the Jr. Colts, and their daughter is in gymnastics.

“I am a huge fan of my kids and their sports,” Ashli said. “I love watching them play and the joy it gives them.”

When it comes to professional sports, the Lawson family cheer for the Pittsburg Steelers and Chicago Cubs and enjoy watching their favorite teams play.

“I also love a friendly family competition in miniature golf or bowling,” Ashli said.
